Signup Flow Friction Scorer

A free tool for founders whose visitors reach the signup, trial or checkout flow and leave. List the fields you ask for, the screens before the account exists and what stands in the way, add one month of visitors, conversion and the value of a signup. The scorer gives a friction score out of 100, shows where the points went, and ranks the fixes by what each is worth per month. It runs the engine of the signup-flow-optimizer agent skill in your browser; nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How the score works

  • Required fields: 2.5 points each for the first three, then 6 points for each one after that. Optional fields cost nothing.
  • Steps: one screen is free; each extra screen costs 8 points.
  • Blocking items: card required before value (28), demo or sales gate before trying (25), email verification that blocks entry (14), no Google or SSO option (12), asking for data already given (10), no way to try before committing (9), restrictive password rules (6) and multi-step with no progress indicator (5).

The money figures start from the visitors who did not sign up, keep only the share friction is blocking (15% unless you change it), and split that slice across the items you ticked by their weights. So the total can never be more than that slice. Fields and steps lower the score but get no dollar value. The tool also runs the engine again with one fewer required field and one fewer screen, to show what each costs in points.

Limits

  • The weights are the engine's directional priors for B2B SaaS signup flows, not measurements from your funnel. The figures rank what to test first; they do not forecast conversion.
  • It cannot see the offer. If the page before the flow does not make the case, a shorter form converts the same few convinced people.
  • Measure downstream. A flow that lifts signups but lowers activation, or floods sales with unqualified leads, has made things worse.

Why I built it

Signup flows collect fields the way codebases collect flags. Each one was added for a reason, and none is ever removed. The team knows why every field is there; the visitor sees a wall. I wanted a quick way to put a number on that wall and say which part to take out first.

To check the page before the flow, use the Website Conversion Audit. To read the test once you change the flow, use the A/B Test Significance Calculator.

Run this in your agent

The free AAJ agent skill Signup Flow Optimizer does this job inside a coding agent, on your own data. Install it with npx skills add sarojkjha/aaj-marketing-skills --skill signup-flow-optimizer.

Frequently asked questions

How many fields should a signup form have?

As few as the account needs to work. In the engine, the first three required fields cost 2.5 points each and every one after that costs 6, more than twice as much. Ask for the rest after the visitor has seen value.

Should I ask for a credit card before the trial?

It is the heaviest item in the engine, at 28 points, because it stands between the visitor and any value. It also filters for intent, so in AAJ's view it is a positioning decision as much as a conversion one. Decide which you want, then test it.

Where do the dollar figures come from?

From your visitors, your conversion rate and your value of a signup. The engine takes the visitors who did not sign up, keeps only the friction-blocked share (15% unless you change it), and splits that slice across the items you ticked by their weights. The figures rank fixes; they are not a forecast.

Is my data stored or shared?

Nothing is sent anywhere. The scorer runs in your browser. Your last entries are kept in this browser only, so a refresh does not lose them; Start over clears them.
