Five-Second Message Test
Free tool by AAJ - does your page say what you think it says?
A five-second test shows one screen to someone for five seconds, hides it, and asks what they took away. This tool runs the test in the browser, one person at a time or over a shared screen, or gives you the questions to send with any survey tool. It then scores the answers against what the page was meant to say. The screenshot is opened in the browser and never uploaded.
Use the tool at aajconsult.com/tools/five-second-message-test.
The five questions
First, what words, phrases or images people remember. Then four questions the first screen of a page has to answer: what the company or product does, who it is for, the main reason someone would choose it, and what they would do next on the page.
How the answers are scored
For each of the four questions you list the words a right answer would use. An answer counts when it contains one of them, after simple stemming and in any word order. Answers such as "no idea" or "not sure" count as no answer, which is a stronger signal than a wrong one. Keyword scoring is a first pass, so every answer can be marked right or wrong by hand and the scores update.
Each question gets the share of people who got it and a 95% Wilson interval. The tool calls a question landed when at least two thirds got it, partly landed from one third, and missed below that. Those thresholds are rules of the tool, not industry benchmarks. Under five respondents the result is shown and flagged as a first look.
What it cannot tell you
It measures first impressions of one screen, from the people you asked. Ask people who match your buyer and have not seen the page: colleagues already know what the company does. Test the phone version separately, because the first screen on a phone often shows something different.

Frequently asked questions
Where does the method come from?
From usability research: Christine Perfetti described five-second tests for User Interface Engineering, and Paul Doncaster's book The UX Five-Second Rules covers how to design them.
Is my data stored or shared?
No. The screenshot and the answers stay in the browser and nothing is saved.
