What is a good NRR and GRR for a startup?

Annually, NRR above 100% grows the base with zero new logos, ~110%+ is strong, and 120%+ is best-in-class; below 100% means new sales run just to stand still. GRR of 90%+ is strong, and below about 80% is a leaky base. Read yours against your own segment, and the trend matters as much as the level.

What is the difference between NRR and GRR?

GRR measures the dollars you keep before expansion and can never exceed 100%. NRR counts expansion too, so it can exceed 100%. The gap between them is expansion. A strong NRR can hide a weak GRR when big expansions mask churn, so read both plus logo churn.

If the base leaks, retention first. Pouring traffic into a leaky funnel just raises CAC. Because LTV is proportional to 1/churn, cutting churn is often a bigger move than a price or acquisition change. Fix involuntary churn and activation first, then build the expansion motion that pushes NRR past 100%.
